Desert Dwellers is a small, independently owned, family-run business proudly based in Alice Springs. We first opened our retail doors in 2001 after noticing a gap in the local market for quality, reliable camping and outdoor gear suited to Central Australian conditions.

Our journey began with a small opening order from Oztrail and a big leap of faith. At the time, moving into retail from a background in upholstery and shade solutions was a major change, but as our knowledge grew, so did our business.

Year by year, Desert Dwellers has continued to expand, supplying campers and caravanners of all experience levels, from complete beginners through to seasoned outback travellers.

As demand increased, 2014 saw us move into a larger premises to better house our ever-growing showroom and range. This expansion allowed us to broaden our offering even further, adding more trusted suppliers and a wider selection of quality camping, touring, and 4x4 equipment.

 We continue to carefully select products that perform in harsh conditions, always keeping durability, value and practicality front of mind.

Today, Desert Dwellers stocks a wide range of camping and caravanning gear, swags, awnings, fridges, 12V accessories, recovery gear, YETI drinkware, along with a growing range of offroad recreational vehicles including YCF and Kayo Moto bikes, quads, buggies, and Wired electric balance bikes.

We are constantly on the lookout for new and innovative products that make outdoor adventures safer, easier, and more enjoyable.

The business is owned and operated by the Herlaar family, with founder John Herlaar -known locally as our very own camping Guru/ Cameleer — leading the way for over 17 years.

In 2017, John made the decision to step back in the hopes of retiring, passing the day-to-day management of Desert Dwellers to his eldest daughter. In true Herlaar fashion, retirement didn’t last long. John went on to pursue a lifelong dream close to his heart, founding Camel Tours NT, combining his love of the outback with a passion he had carried for years.

While John was born in the city, the outback has always been his true home, and that connection to Central Australia remains at the heart of Desert Dwellers today.
